AI voice agents
5 questions to ask before you buy an AI voice agent
An AI voice agent answers your business phone calls when you cannot. It will speak to your customers in your name, so the choice matters. Before you pay for one, ask the seller these five questions. The answers tell you quickly whether the product is honest and ready for your customers.
If you are new to the idea, start with our plain guide on what an AI voice agent is and come back.
1. What languages does it speak?
Your customers do not all speak English. Ask exactly which languages the agent handles, including the regional languages your callers actually use. Then test it yourself: call the demo line and speak the way your customers speak, with the same accent and the same mix of languages.
If it only works well in English, it is not ready for your shop.
2. What happens when it does not know the answer?
This is the most important question on the list. A good agent says plainly that it does not know, takes the caller's name and number and passes the message to you. A bad agent guesses. A wrong answer from your business phone line is worse than no answer at all.
Ask the seller to show you exactly what the agent says when it is unsure. It should also hand the call to a person when the caller asks for one.
3. Who owns the call recordings?
The calls are your customers and your business, so you should own the recordings. Ask these questions:
- Can I listen to every call?
- Can I download the recordings?
- Where are they stored, and for how long?
- Does the agent tell callers that the call is recorded?
If the vendor cannot answer plainly, walk away.
4. How fast can it go live?
An agent for a small business should take days, not months. Ask what the vendor needs from you. It is usually your phone number, your opening hours, your services and the questions callers ask most.
If the setup needs your developer or weeks of meetings, it is the wrong product for a small team.
5. What does it cost per month after setup?
Get the full monthly number in writing. Ask about the subscription, any per-minute call charges and any phone number rental. Ask what a typical month costs at your call volume, not the smallest possible plan.
A vendor who hides the running cost is planning a surprise. Prices for voice agents vary with scope, so a good seller will ask about your calls first and then quote.
How the answers compare
Use this table as a quick score sheet when you talk to two or three vendors.
| Question | A good answer | A warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Languages | Named languages, and a live demo in them | "We support many languages" with no demo |
| When unsure | Says so, takes a message, hands over | Guesses, or loops |
| Recordings | You own, listen to and download them | "Our system handles that" |
| Time to live | Days, with a short list of what you provide | Months, or a long project plan |
| Monthly cost | One clear number in writing | Costs revealed after you sign |
Try before you decide
Do not rely on a sales demo. Call the agent, interrupt it, ask something odd and speak in the language your customers use. A real agent copes with that. You can call ours, Meera, on +91 80 6427 6661 and ask her all five questions yourself.
If you want to know what a missed call is costing you before you spend anything, run the sum in what a missed call really costs a small business. When you are ready to talk, see our AI voice agents or message us.
The short version
Any honest vendor answers all five without hedging. The languages are named, the unsure case is shown to you, the recordings are yours, the setup takes days and the monthly cost is one clear number.
Frequently asked questions
What should I check before buying an AI voice agent?
Check the languages it speaks, what it does when it is unsure, who owns the recordings, how fast it goes live and the full monthly cost. Test it by calling it yourself.
How do I know if an AI voice agent is honest?
It tells callers it is an AI, says plainly when it does not know, hands over to a person on request and tells callers when a call is recorded. Ask the vendor to show each of these.
Who should own the call recordings?
You should. The calls are your customers, so you should be able to listen to them, download them and know where they are stored and for how long.
How long does it take to set up an AI voice agent?
For a small business it should take days. The vendor mainly needs your phone number, your opening hours, your services and the questions your callers ask most.
What does an AI voice agent cost per month?
It depends on your call volume, languages and tasks, so honest vendors quote by scope. Ask for the full monthly figure in writing, including call charges and number rental.
